South Baltic WebLab

Workshop August 2012, Klaipeda

Third step in crossborder exchange of experience

As part of the third Summer Science Camp of the South Baltic WebLab, the workshop “Science Meets School” was organised with the purpose of sharing experiences with co-operations between schools and science institutions. Teachers from Lithuania and participants of previous and recent camps took part in the workshop. It was opened by the vice director of Klaipėda University Coastal Research and Planning Institute, Prof Dr. Artūras Razinkovas-Baziukas, who introduced different institutional activities like writing popular scientific articles or offering young researcher schooling for pupils. The teachers Ida Broe Lassen from the Greve gymnasium (Denmark) and Christoph Felsing from the CJD Christophorusschule Rostock (Germany) shared their experience from a school perspective. In both countries, the level of cooperation with research institutions is really good compared to, for example, Lithuania, where the cooperation activities have only started recently. The student Filip Jabłczyński from Poland presented his personal involvement in different local and international scientific activities, demonstrating how much getting involved in such events is dependent on the pupils’ personal motivation and the effort they make. Other workshop participants shared their experience by giving a poster presentation.

During the second part of the event, the students who took part in science camps presented their research results, which were quite impressive: the students did not only conduct their own research but also prepared high quality scientific poster presentations. They presented them to the public and gave answers to all the questions asked.
